Interviewing Tips
Courtesy of Michael Jones:
- Ask questions that will help you tell a story: Even if the interview formatted as a Q&A, it can still be structured and organized in a way that takes the reader on a fulfilling journey. I like to start at the end and think about what I want the reader to know about this person once they’ve read my interview then plan my questions backwards from there.
- Look for opportunities to follow-up: If you’re unclear about something or would like to go deeper on a topic or theme, feel empowered to raise follow-up questions.
- Sprinkle in “off topic” questions: I love to ask people what they’re reading or listening to or the last best meal they had to reveal something unexpected to readers whether they’re familiar with the person I’m interviewing or not.
- Ask for referrals: Once the interview is live, I send the interviewee a thank-you email with a link to the post and a referral to any folks in their network who should be on my radar. (I got six recommendations from someone I featured last week!) It’s easier to get a yes when you’ve got a personal connection or common relationship with the person you’re asking to interview.
